Individual Counselling for Depression and Low Mood

Approximately 5 to 11% of Canadians experience depression each year (Statistics Canada, 2020). It is not uncommon for most people to feel down or depressed at some point in their lives. Sometimes, we can trace it back to certain situations we have experienced. Other times, it feels as though it has come out of the blue.

Some common signs of depression and low mood include:

    • losing your interest or motivation
    • changes in your sleep and appetite
    • feeling tired all the time
    • finding it hard to concentrate
    • wanting to isolate or withdraw from others

While feeling sad and down is a normal feeling that we have all experienced, if these symptoms are lasting for weeks and you find that they are interfering with your work, relationships or other aspects of your life, it can be very helpful to address this in counselling.

    How Can Counselling Help?

Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we can get a bird’s eye view of how these emotions are related to your situations, thoughts, behaviors and body. With this perspective, we are better able to take the steps to gradually get your life back. This may involve exploring how our thinking and daily activities may affect our mood, and learning some new coping tools such as mindfulness and relaxation skills.

Alternatively, Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) can be an effective treatment for depression. This involves reprocessing memories that contribute to your current depression.

Even though things may seem overwhelming or hopeless right now, there are options and there is hope. As a clinical counsellor, I have witnessed clients experiencing changes in their situations.

Some of these changes may look like:

    • restoring your sense of hope
    • enjoying your hobbies again
    • noticing a positive change in your thinking
    • getting your energy back
    • being able to complete important tasks

Things might feel challenging right now but it does not have to stay that way.
